Most people will experience bleeding gums during their lifetimes. In the last year, over 50% of people have experienced it while toothbrushing. They are a sign of gum disease. As far as statistics go, almost 20% of people stop brushing in that area and 8% stop brushing completely. Also, a little over 20% make an appointment with their dentist and almost 30% just don’t pay any attention to it. According to the GSK and the Oral Health Foundation, here are five ways to stop your bleeding gums:
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride paste for two minutes each time
This is very important for gum health which is the reason why it’s first on this list. It is recommended to brush your teeth after taking food and if possible, using an electric toothbrush. You should also spit the remaining paste that´s left on your toothbrush and not rinsing the mouth with water. Brushing twice daily will remove plaque which is a potential cause of gum disease and tooth decay.
Floss your teeth
The use of interdental floss is adamant for having a proper dental hygiene and health. Given the fact that the toothbrush can’t get between the teeth, floss will do the trick. It is important to note that as Nigel Carter, the Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation says, you may experience gum bleeding when first starting to floss your teeth, however, after less than two weeks this should stop.
Use mouth wash
Using it will clean up the debris and prevent plaque build-up
Going to the dentist
They will be able to help with any oral issues you may have such as bleeding gums.
Healthy diet and lifestyle
Sugar-free products should be preferred as the other ones can cause damage to your teeth and gums. Veggies and fruits are the way to go when it comes to preventing gum disease.
Studies have shown a correlation between good gum health and a reduction of heart disease. That being said, the benefits of treating gum bleeding go beyond the oral health realm. If you would like to get bleeding gums checked out, check Douglas Dentistry , stop by or give us a call.
